Tamil Nadu declares right to self-government; Chief Minister MK Stalin presents resolution in the assembly, committee to study rights of states

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has moved a resolution in the Assembly declaring the right to self-government. MK Stalin said that the fight against the encroachment of the state's rights will be intensified. A resolution related to language and education was also moved in the House.

This is a repeat of the appointment of the Rajamannar Committee by the Karunanidhi government in 1969. He also clarified that the committee will submit its interim report in January 2026. Chief Minister MK Stalin announced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly that a committee headed by retired Supreme Court Justice Kurian Joseph is being appointed for this purpose to study the rights of the states. The committee's recommendation will be implemented to restore the rights of the states.

The Commission's consideration includes whether there is a need for a review of federal principles. Former IAS officer Ashok Vardhan Shetty and Professor M Naganathan are members of the committee. The Commission is responsible for a comprehensive examination of the Centre-state relations. The Commission has also been asked to suggest constitutional amendments, if necessary, for the right to self-government of the states.
