History of the Jain Temple

The Jain Temple in Alleppey was built over a century ago by 42 Jain families who were brought from the Kutch district of Gujarat during the reign of Dewan Raja Kesavadas. These families were instrumental in the industrial development of Alleppey, and the temple became a spiritual center for the Jain community. The temple features two shrines: one over 100 years old and a newer one built 22 years ago.

The temple is dedicated to the 12th Tirthankara Vasupujya Swami, with statues of the 15th Tirthankara Swami Dharmanath and the 11th Tirthankara Swami Shreyansanatha placed on either side. The temple also houses a statue of the 23rd Tirthankara Parshvanatha Swami on the top floor.  The intricate carvings and murals, made from single marble pieces, reflect a blend of Jain architectural style with local designs.

Visiting Hours

The Jain Temple is open to visitors from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily. The temple follows a strict set of rituals, including a daily Pooja that lasts around one and a half hours. This practice is believed to bring spiritual sanctity and nirvana to the lives of its followers.

Annual Festival: Parva Paryushana

One of the most significant events at the Jain Temple is the annual festival called "Parva Paryushana," which takes place over eight days in August and September. During this festival, special rituals are performed, and Aacharyas from Gujarat are invited to lead the ceremonies. Devotees from all parts of India gather at the temple to participate in the festival and read the history of the 24 Tirthankaras.

The Jain Temple is located on Gujarati Street, near the Northeast side of the Muppalam in Alleppey. It is easily accessible by road, with the Alappuzha Bus Stand about 3.1 km away. The nearest railway station is Alappuzha Railway Station, approximately 2 km from the temple. For those traveling by air, Cochin International Airport is about 82.5 km away.
