5 Records That Were Broken During Kolkata Knight Riders-Punjab Kings IPL 2024 Match

Punjab Kings beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 8 wickets in match No. 42 of the IPL 2024 played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday (April 26). The Sam Curran-led side chased down the target of 262 runs in 18.4 overs for the loss of two wickets to script history and keep themselves alive in the race to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs. For KKR, English batter Jonny Bairstow top-scored by remaining unbeaten on 108 runs from 48 balls, and uncapped Indian batters Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh scored 68* and 54 runs, respectively.

By chasing down a total of 262 runs in Kolkata, the Punjab Kings created many records. Here’s a look at five such IPL records that were broken during the KKR-PBKS IPL 2024 match:

Highest target successfully chased in IPL and T20s: The Punjab Kings now hold the record for successfully chasing down the highest total in IPL as well as T20 history. Before PBKS’ 262-run chase, the record in the IPL was held by the Rajasthan Royals, which twice (vs PBKS in 2020 and vs KKR in 2024) scored 224 runs in the second innings to win the match. In T20s, the record was held by the South African men’s cricket team, which scored 259 runs against the West Indies in Centurion in 2023 to win the match.

Joint-highest total in 2nd innings of a T20 match: By scoring 262 runs in 18.4 overs against KKR on Friday (April 26), the Punjab Kings equaled RCB’s record for the highest score in the second innings of a T20 match. In the IPL 2024 match played against SRH in Hyderabad on April 15, 2024, RCB scored 262 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs but still lost the match by 25 runs.

Most sixes in an IPL innings: Punjab Kings batters smacked a total of 24 sixes, which is a new record for most sixes hit by any team in one innings of an IPL match. For the visitors, Shashank Singh topped the chart by smashing nine maximums in 28 balls, and eight sixes were hammered by Jonny Bairstow (108*). Opening batter Prabhsimran hit five sixes, and Rilee Rossouw also scored a couple of sixes.

Most sixes in a men’s T20 match: In the IPL 2024 match played between PBKS and KKR, 42 sixes were hit by players from both teams, which is a new world record for most sixes in a T20 match played so far. The previous record was 38 sixes set during the SRH-MI IPL 2024 match played in Hyderabad on March 27, 2024.

3rd fastest IPL fifty for PBKS: Prabhsimran Singh needed just 18 balls to complete his half-century in the run chase against KKR on April 26, and by doing so, he now holds the record for scoring the third-fastest fifty in IPL history by a Punjab Kings batter. The record for fastest fifty by a PBKS player is held by former captain KL Rahul, who crossed the 50-run mark in just 14 balls against the Delhi Capitals in 2018.
