Kozhikode Medical College fire; Medical board meeting today

The medical board will meet at 10.30 am today to discuss the smoke rising from the emergency department of Kozhikode Medical College. The meeting will decide on the post-mortem procedures of the two people who died yesterday. Authorities say that the five deaths were not due to the smoke in the hospital. The medical college principal informed that one of the five deceased was dead when he was brought to the hospital and the others were in a critical condition.

The relatives have raised suspicions in the deaths of Gopalan, a native of Westhill in Kozhikode, Surendran, a native of Vadakara, Gangadharan, a native of Koyilandy, Ganga from West Bengal, and Nazira, a native of Wayanad. In which, the bodies of Gangadharan and Nazira will be subjected to post-mortem. The relatives allege that they died due to smoke inhalation.

The smoke came from the UPS room inside the building where the emergency department is located. The engineering and electrical departments will conduct an inspection here. Meanwhile, the cleaning work in the casualty ward, which was stopped due to smoke, was completed at night. The work will resume only after the electrical faults are fixed.

Emergency treatment is being coordinated by deputing more doctors in the casualty ward of the Beach General Hospital. 34 patients were shifted to various hospitals following the accident. Smoke was seen coming out of the medical college emergency ward at around 7:30 pm on Friday. The fire force immediately reached the spot and evacuated the patients. Health Minister Veena George has directed the Director of the Medical Education Department to investigate the incident.
