Who doesn't like superheroes? When we think of superheroes, the first thing that comes to our mind is Hollywood's Superman, Batman, and Marvel heroes, who have entertained us for decades. Superhero movies have been released in Hollywood since the early 1920s, but it was Vinayan who made it in Malayalam cinema with the fantasy science fiction film 'Athishayan', which was released in 2007. The film, which had existed until then, had become a favorite of the audience and children alike. Actor Ramu's son Devadas played the superhero character Devan in the film. The story is that Devan gets state-of-the-art powers through a scientific experiment and later the boy grows up and becomes a superhero to save humans.
Then, another Malayalam superhero movie, Little Superman, released in 2014, directed by Vinayan himself. But the film did not receive the expected reception in theaters. Years later, in 2021, a thunderbolt struck. Yes, a high-voltage superhero arrived in Malayalam cinema under the direction of a young man named Basil Joseph.
With the release of Minnal Murali, starring Tovino Thomas, Malayalam cinema began to be praised all over the world. The story of Minnal Murali, the savior of a village called Kurukkanmoola, was welcomed by the audience with open arms. Minnal Murali reached the audience as an OTT release due to Covid restrictions. Tovino gained attention at the pan-Indian level through the film, which was released in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada languages apart from Malayalam.
Thus, as we reach 2025, Kalyani Priyadarshan's Loka Chapter 1 Chandra is advancing in theaters, wiping out the concept of male superhero. The first female superhero in Malayalam. A female-centric superhero film from South India is receiving tremendous audience support across the country. Directed by Dominic Arun, the film also stars Chandu Salim Kumar, Arun Kurian, and Shanthi Balachandran in pivotal roles. Made on a budget of Rs 30 crore, the film is the first film in the Loka Cinematic Universe.
