Karnataka Police have arrested 8 people in connection with the murder of Bajrang Dal leader Suhas Shetty, a prime accused in the 2022 Mohammed Fazil murder case, in Mangaluru, Karnataka.
Police sources said that all the arrested accused belonged to the notorious gang of gangsters called 'Safwan'. Suhas, the prime accused in the 2022 Mohammed Fazil murder case, was hacked to death by a group of assailants on the night of May 1 in Kinnikambla, Bajpe. The six-member gang, who arrived in a car and a pickup van, stopped the vehicle in which Suhas and his friends were travelling, dragged Suhas out and attacked them with deadly weapons.
The eight arrested are Abdul Safwan (29), a native of Bajpai, Adil Mehroof, brother of Mohammed Fazil, Niyaz (28), a native of Bajpai, Mohammed Muzammil (32), a native of Mangaluru, Kalandar Shafi (32), a native of Chikkamagaluru, Ranjith (19), a native of Chikkamagaluru, Nagaraj (20). Mohammed Rizwan (28), a native of Mangaluru.

In 2023, Safwan was attacked by Suhas Shetty's friends Prashant, Ganesh, Yajnesh, Dhanraj and Puneeth. A case is pending at Suratkal police station in connection with that incident. Safwan, who was seriously injured in the attack, was hospitalized and harbored a grudge against Prashanth and his friends who attacked him. Police say that Suhas Shetty was the one who protected and helped Prashanth and his friends, and it was after this that the accused decided to kill Suhas. Violent incidents were reported in Mangaluru following the incident. The VHP called for a bandh on Friday and shops in the city were closed. KSRTC services to the suburbs were also suspended after stones were pelted at KSRTC buses near Pumpwell and Kanganadi areas and some cases of assault were registered.
