Flydubai Flight Incident: Investigation into Omani Pilot's Australian Connections
The investigation into the incident aboard the Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv has intensified, focusing on the co-pilot's international connections. *The Guardian* reported that Australian security agencies have also launched an inquiry after it was revealed that the accused had lived in Australia for about two years on a student visa.
The dramatic events unfolded on September 30 aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was carrying 174 passengers and crew. After stabbing and injuring the captain, the co-pilot attempted to seize control of the aircraft. However, passengers and other crew members managed to overpower him in a daring effort. A major disaster was averted thanks to the timely intervention of the crew on board. The flight subsequently made an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, where Saudi authorities took the accused into custody. He was handed over to the UAE on Thursday.
According to available information, the accused obtained an Australian student visa in 2014 and arrived in the country in 2015 for university studies. He remained in the country until 2017 before eventually leaving Australia. Subsequently, authorities cancelled his student visa in 2019 after he failed to complete his course. The Australian Federal Police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation are currently gathering information regarding his connections in Australia.
The UAE, Israel, and Saudi Arabia are jointly conducting the investigation. Authorities are examining whether there were terrorist motives or other conspiracies behind the attack. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that those responsible for the incident would face severe punishment. Flydubai Chief Executive Ghaith Al Ghaith confirmed in a statement that an official investigation into the critical events on board the flight is underway.
