Nitish Kumar resigns as CM, hands over Bihar to BJP; Deputy CM and BJP leader Samrat Chaudhary is the new CM of Bihar
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has resigned, marking the end of an era in Bihar politics. Nitish Kumar resigned as CM after taking oath as a Rajya Sabha member. After the last cabinet meeting on Tuesday, the JDU leader submitted his resignation to the Governor. He also assured full cooperation to the new government. Current Deputy CM and BJP leader Samrat Chaudhary will be the new CM of Bihar.
Samrat Chaudhary was officially announced as the new CM after the NDA meeting on Tuesday evening. The oath-taking ceremony will be held on Wednesday evening. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others will attend the oath-taking ceremony. For the first time in history, the BJP is taking over as the CM of Bihar
The era of Nitish Kumar, who was the longest-serving CM in Bihar, has come to an end. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigned from the Bihar Legislative Council (MLC) in late March, fulfilling the constitutional requirements after being elected to the Rajya Sabha. Nitish Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16. Nitish Kumar's resignation came four months after he took office as the Chief Minister for the tenth time.
There were early indications that Samrat Chaudhary from the OBC category would become the new Chief Minister of Bihar. Meanwhile, the names of BJP leaders Nityanand Rai and Renu Devi were also being considered. There were also rumors that JDU leader and Nitish Kumar's son Nishant Kumar could become the Chief Minister. Then, putting an end to all the rumors, the BJP announced Samrat Chaudhary as the new Chief Minister.
The JDU and the NDA fought the 2025 elections under the leadership of Nitish Kumar. JDU working president Sanjay Kumar Jha has said that the work of the new government will also be as per Nitish Kumar's guidelines. Even though he is not the Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar will focus only on Bihar. He will only go to Delhi for the Parliament session, Sanjay Kumar Jha said.
