US Tariff; Central Government Campaigns in 40 Countries to Increase Exports of Indian Textiles

The Union Textile Ministry will organize campaigns in 40 countries to overcome the crisis created by the additional tariffs of the US. It has been decided to campaign about the diversity of Indian textiles in countries like UK, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, UAE, Australia, Netherlands, Poland, Canada, Mexico, Russia, Belgium and Turkey.
The garment industry is one of the sectors that is facing the most crisis due to the 50 percent tariff imposed by the US. After the tariff came into effect, many garment and footwear manufacturing centers in Tiruppur, Noida and Surat had stopped or reduced production.
Since the textiles are available at low prices from countries like Vietnam and Bangladesh, it has become difficult for Indian manufacturers to compete with them. In this situation, it has been decided to focus on the campaign in 40 markets.

India currently exports to over 220 countries. But the 40 countries selected now play a major role. Together, they import over $590 billion. But India's share is only 5-6 percent.
"Recognizing this, the government is planning promotional campaigns in all these 40 countries, focusing on traditional and emerging markets," the official said.

The new US tariffs, which came into effect on August 27, are expected to hit Indian exports worth over $48 billion. The additional duties will also affect textiles and apparel, gems and jewellery, shrimp, leather, footwear, animal products, chemicals, electrical and mechanical machinery.
