BJP fails to elect CM; President's rule imposed in Manipur

The Centre has imposed President's rule in riot-hit Manipur following the resignation of Chief Minister Biren Singh. The Central government issued a notification imposing President's rule under Article 356 of the Constitution within days of Chief Minister Biren Singh's resignation.

The Centre's move comes in the wake of the failure to find a common candidate for the post of Chief Minister to succeed Biren Singh. There were earlier reports that President's rule would be imposed in Manipur after the Parliament session. There is a big tussle among BJP MLAs over Biren Singh's successor. A meeting of MLAs was held the other day, but it broke up without reaching a consensus on the Chief Minister's post.

BJP leader in charge of Manipur, Sambit Patra, and BJP state president Sharada Devi had met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and explained the current situation. The Centre issued a notification imposing President's rule after this.
