Kamal Haasan takes oath as Rajya Sabha MP, actor makes his debut in Parliament

Actor Kamal Haasan took oath as a Rajya Sabha member. He took the oath in Tamil. Kamal Haasan said that the journey to Parliament was a great honor for him. He added that he has a lot to accomplish. Kamal Haasan received strong support from other members of Parliament. The election to the House is an important milestone in Kamal Haasan's political career. Kamal Haasan was nominated with the support of the ruling DMK-led alliance, which had promised a Rajya Sabha seat in return for the support of MNM (Makkal Needhi Maiam) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

On June 6, at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, V.C.K. leader T. Thirumavalavan, M.D.M.M.K.'s Vaiko and Tamil Nadu Congress chief Selvaperunthagai, along with DMK leaders. Kamal Haasan filed his nomination papers in the presence of his allies. A candidate needs at least 34 votes to be elected to the Rajya Sabha from the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Makkal Needhi Maiam did not contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Instead, it had lent its full support to the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu. MNM had secured 2.62 per cent of the votes in the 2021 assembly elections. On June 12, Kamal Haasan and five others were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu. They received their election certificates from Returning Officer Subrahmanyam at a function held at the Chennai Secretariat.
