As heavy rain lashed Delhi early Friday, waterlogging in many areas of the city led to a flood-like situation causing heavy traffic jams on the roads. Visuals coming from various parts of the city show several areas inundated with water, leading to long traffic jams which affected commuters, especially, office-goers. At the New Delhi Railway Station, commuters had to walk through knee-deep water, carrying children to navigate the flooded roads. Water also filled metro stations in some areas, adding to the discomfort of the people.

According to the police, traffic is affected on Anuvrat Marg in both the carriageways from 100 Foota Red Light and Lado Sarai Red Light and vice-versa due to waterlogging. On Ring Road, traffic is slow in both directions from Naraina towards Moti Bagh and vice-versa due to waterlogging under the Dhaula Kuan Flyover.

Flight departures at the Delhi airport’s Terminal 1 were suspended till 2 pm on Friday after a portion of its roof collapsed amid incessant rains, killing one and injuring many.

The flight departures were suspended soon after the roof collapse incident at 5 am. Passengers who were already inside the terminal boarded their flights. The departures were completely suspended around 7:30 am. Flight arrivals have not been impacted, the sources said.

Three fire-tenders were sent to the airport after a call about the incident was received by the DFS around 5:30 am.

Besides the roof sheet, the support beams collapsed, damaging the cars parked in the pick-up and drop area of the terminal, the officials said.

The injured persons were admitted to Medanta Hospital near the airport. One of the injured succumbed during treatment, they said.

An investigation has been ordered into the roof collapse at Delhi airport’s Terminal 1 on Friday early morning that left one dead and six others injured, with Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu announcing that a thorough inspection of the structure at the airport will be carried out. Naidu, who visited the airport, said the situation is under control and Terminal 1 (T1) has been closed down and arrangements are being made to shift operations of flights to T2 and T3.

The minister said a compensation of Rs 20 lakh will be given to the family of the deceased and Rs 3 lakh to the injured people.

The incident happened at around 5 am at the departure area of Terminal 1 (T1) at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) amid heavy rains in the national capital.

According to sources, arrivals were going on at the Terminal 1 of Delhi airport till 10.30 am. However, now the SpiceJect has shifted its arrivals and departures from T1 to T3 and IndiGo has Moved from T1 To T2 and T3.

Some labourers are suspected to be trapped in a mud slush in Vasant Kunj. Sources said the exact numbers are to be ascertained. Rescue teams of NDRF, DDMA, civics agencies, fire department, and police have reached. Efforts are underway to recover them from the under-construction basement.

Amid incessant rain, a portion of the road caved in near Rohini Sector 18 Metro Station.
